Common Questions

Medicare & Health Insurance FAQ

Answers to the questions families ask most often about Medicare, ACA, and choosing the right plan.

What is the difference between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare?
Original Medicare (Parts A & B) is the federal program covering hospital and medical care. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is offered by private insurers approved by Medicare — it bundles Parts A & B, usually includes Part D drug coverage, and often adds extras like dental, vision, and hearing. Advantage plans typically have lower premiums but use provider networks; Original Medicare lets you see any Medicare-accepting provider nationwide.
When can I enroll in Medicare?
Your Initial Enrollment Period begins 3 months before you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and extends 3 months after — a 7-month window. If you miss it, the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7 each year) lets you enroll or switch plans. Missing your Initial Enrollment Period without other qualifying coverage can result in permanent premium penalties.
Does Medicare cover prescription drugs?
Original Medicare (Parts A & B) does not cover most outpatient prescription drugs. You can add drug coverage through a standalone Part D Prescription Drug Plan (PDP), or choose a Medicare Advantage plan that includes Part D. If you skip Part D when first eligible and don't have other creditable coverage, you may pay a late enrollment penalty for as long as you have Medicare drug coverage.
What is a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan?
Medigap policies are sold by private insurers to help cover the "gaps" in Original Medicare — copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Popular plans like Plan G and Plan N can significantly reduce out-of-pocket costs. Medigap works alongside Original Medicare; you cannot use it with a Medicare Advantage plan. A licensed JMA agent can compare Medigap plans available in your area.
Can I get help paying for Medicare costs?
Yes. Eligible individuals may qualify for Extra Help (Low Income Subsidy), which assists with Part D costs, and other Medicare Savings Programs that can pay your Part B premium and out-of-pocket costs. Our agents help clients nationwide identify and apply for every benefit they're entitled to — at no cost to you.
How do I choose the right health insurance plan?
The right plan depends on your doctors, prescriptions, budget, and how often you use healthcare. ACA Marketplace plans are best for people under 65 who don't get employer coverage; Medicare plans are for those 65+ or on disability. A licensed JMA agent will review all options available in your ZIP code, check that your preferred doctors are in-network, and compare total annual costs — not just monthly premiums. There's never a fee for our guidance.
